The Bible (Heb.4:12,13; 2 Tim. 3:15,16)

THIS BOOK contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable.

READ IT TO BE WISE, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler's map, the pilgrim's staff, the pilot's compass, the soldier's sword, and the Christians's charter. Here Paradise is restored, Heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed.

CHRIST IS ITS GRAND SUBJECT, our good its design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet.

READ IT SLOWLY, frequently, prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given you in life, will be opened at the judgment, and be remembered for ever. It involves the highest responsibility, will reward the greatest labor, and condemns all who trifle with its sacred contents.

The people of Nineveh...

believed God. Jonah 3:5

This is one of the most remarkable statements in the story. But it never seems to make the impression the whale does. The swallowing of a little man by a big fish is merely a matter of size. The man has only to be small enough and the fish big enough and the job is done. But for that little prophet to walk into New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, London, or any other city and bring that city to repentance and belief in God is some achievement!

Why doesn't the professor get funny about that -- which is really the point of the story.

There is none like it...

Whatsoever things were written aforetime were written...that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Rom. 15:4

David said, There is none like that; give it me. 1 Sam. 21:9

The Bible is always light-giving in every circumstance of life. "There is none like it." Dr. J Wilbur Chapman has said, "There's none like it when your head is aching? There's none like it when the day is without the sun and the night without its star. There is nothing like it when your children are motherless! There is none like it when you bury your baby! There's none like it when the springs of life are snapping! There is none like it when you reach the end of life's journey and pillow your head on its promises and God stoops and kisses you to sleep."

This Book of God I'd rather own than all the gold and gems that are in monarch's coffers shone, than all their diadems.
